University of Chicago’s posting policy
Background
Part of the student conduct code, the University of Chicago’s posting policy aims to clarify their permissible form and content for flyers and posters that publicize events or causes. Unlike some other universities, the University of Chicago does not require students to submit their materials for approval. The policy does, however, restrict certain content, including messaging that “violates the law, falsely defames a specific individual, constitutes a genuine threat or harassment, unjustifiably invades substantial privacy or confidentiality interests, or is otherwise directly incompatible with the functioning of the university.”
What we like about this policy
- Gives ample room for expression, while also setting reasonable restrictions on methods or materials used in posting items that could damage university property (e.g., water-soluble chalk).
- Sets a high bar for what kind of content merits removal, in line with the protections for speech guaranteed in the First Amendment.
- Clearly defines what materials and what spaces on campus are not appropriate for posting.
- Does not require the university’s prior approval for a student to post material.
