Background
In January 2016, after students expressed frustration with the proliferation of racist incidents on campus, American University revised its guidelines for freedom of expression and dissent. At a time of increasingly pitched debate, the revised policy provided needed clarity rules on students’ right to protest and on time, place, and manner restrictions. The policy emphasizes the importance of free speech while offering specific regulations to keep the campus safe and functioning.
